What Is a Casino?

A casino is a gambling establishment where patrons gamble by playing games of chance or skill. These games may include slot machines, video poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat. Casinos make their money by giving out complimentary items (known as comps) to players and by taking a percentage of bets on certain games. Casinos also earn money by offering a number of other services to their patrons including limo service and airline tickets.

Aside from the obvious security cameras that monitor casino patrons, casinos employ a variety of other technological measures to ensure fair play and prevent cheating and stealing. For example, table managers and pit bosses have a much more comprehensive view of the tables and can quickly spot any blatant acts of cheating like palming, marking or switching cards or dice. In addition, electronic systems monitor betting chips and the locations of their use on tables to identify any statistical deviations from expected results.

Many casinos feature elaborate themes and attractions designed to draw in visitors. Musical shows, shopping centers, lighted fountains and hotels are all features found in some casinos. However, the majority of a casino’s profits come from gambling and the billions of dollars in bets placed each year by millions of gamblers.
