The Importance Of Wellness In The Public Health Spectrum

Health is a condition of mental, physical and emotional well being where infirmity and illness are absent. Different definitions have been applied to the concept of health over the years. In the United States, the National Academy of Sciences defines health as the ability to cope with the demands of life. This definition is inclusive of the ability to live an active and healthy life and a capacity to contribute to the society in a positive way. It also includes a sense of worth and having adequate satisfaction with life.

The concept of health has been expanded by many disciplines. Concepts such as general health, cognitive function, physiological health, nutrition, family health, and preventative care have all contributed to the better understanding of how we can maintain wellness in our everyday lives. Research has shown that physical and mental wellness will lead to higher levels of well-being, lower risks for illness, and lower levels of mortality. Some of the risk factors associated with poor overall health and disorders include poor self-image, depression, stress, aging, obesity, substance abuse, eating disorders, insomnia, chronic pain, and unintentional injury. The results of some studies show that there is a strong genetic component to both conditions.

Public health educators emphasize the importance of promoting physical activity, diet, exercise, and tobacco control. There are many organizations that promote the use of natural products in place of pharmaceuticals. Natural products that are effective in improving overall health include vitamins and minerals, green tea, chlorella, herbal teas, and other botanicals. Natural products that have been known to improve health include: probiotics, herbs, vitamin E, resveratrol, garlic, and honey.
