Botanical Definition of Lycopsida Pomona

In botany, a fruit tree is the outer, fruit-bearing part in flowering trees which is developed from the ovaries at the time of flowering. In a fruit tree, the male part, called the apple (or pear) develops at the end nearest the ground while the female part, called the blackberry or raspberry, develops towards the center of the trunk. There are different types of fruit trees depending on their geographical location: for example, in Central America, fruit trees are called “mango,” “date palm,” “forest chestnut,” etc. Below are some types of familiar fruit trees.

The Acacia bonsai is an Asian species that comprises of numerous small, dark-colored aggregates of trees. These aggregates, usually about one-half inch long, are covered with a thin, wax-like material. It has single flower stalks and one solitary ovary. The fruit, also known as a pod, is covered with a powdery substance and has a black, furry surface. This fruit grows up to three feet tall and has yellow flesh that turns black when ripe.

Lycopsida cordifolia or the True Lemon Tree is a Mediterranean shrub found in drier areas along the Mediterranean Sea. This tree is a member of the lily family, Liliaceae. Its graceful branches and beautiful flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. A lemon tree often bears fruits bearing seeds at the end of its branchlets which bear black, leathery, sweet grapes. Sometimes the single flower can be left on the lower branches to bloom again every season.

Lycopsida maximus or the Red Impeller Pear is an Asian fruit with flesh that is round and roundish. It is actually a fruit rather than a vegetable and it features two different styles of blooming, namely, umbel and lunation. The fruit itself is a very large, dark colored drupe with a hard yellow exterior and a soft yellow interior. It features four leaved runners with two curved tips and its name was given to it because of its shapely appearance.

Lycopsida pomona or the Red Pomona Fruit refers to a fruit with numerous flowers. It is a vegetable, but unlike cucumbers, tomatoes and squash, it actually has a fruit inside. The fruit, as mentioned above, is a large drupe. It has a medium to long lasting flowering plant and it blooms for several flowers before dropping off into the soil. One interesting thing about this fruit, however, is that it actually flowers on its own, without having to depend upon a greenhouse.

In the botanical definition above, you see that there are several types of Lycopsida. It is a shame that this common vegetable is not more widely known as a food. It’s size and shape makes it excellent for juicing and for making juices out of it with a blender. It is also a good choice for making vegetables and sauces with a blender because it has a very mild flavor.
