A slot is an authorization to take off or land at a specific airport on a specific day during a specified time period. The machine’s name was inspired by the fact that if three aligned liberty bells lined up on a payline, a player could win $100.

In a slot machine, the random-number generator generates dozens of numbers every second. When the spin button is pressed or the handle pulled, the generator sets a number to correspond with each combination of symbols on the reels. The slot then pays out when the reels stop.
