Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game where you compete against other players. The objective is to win a round by having the highest ranked five-card hand. There are many different types, variants and limits of poker, but the basic rules remain the same for all games. The first step to becoming a better player is understanding the basics, including the different hands and strategies. Once you have a strong grasp of these fundamentals, you can begin to learn more advanced concepts and nuances of the game.
After each player has two hole cards, there is a round of betting. This is started by 2 mandatory bets called blinds that are put into the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. Players can then choose to call the bet, raise it or fold.
If a player decides to stay in the hand they must put out chips equal to the amount of the previous bet (call). The player can also say they want to raise the current bet by saying “raise.” The next player takes their turn to either call or fold their cards into the dealer face down.
Once the betting round is over the dealer deals three more cards on the table that everyone can use (called the flop). Then there is another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the button. Once the betting is complete all players reveal their hands and the highest ranked hand wins the pot.
