What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow opening, often in the shape of a slit or other thin divider, through which something can be inserted. Slots are sometimes used to receive coins, as in a coin machine, or to hold a paper ticket with barcode for scanning (as on an airliner).

A slot is also a position within a sequence or series, as in “a time slot” for a meeting. The term is also used for a position in a line, as when someone waits in a long line for a ride on the Ferris wheel.

A slot is also a place in a game, where a player places their bet. Slots can vary in complexity from simple mechanical reels to computerized machines with multiple pay lines and symbols.
