What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow opening, often in the shape of a slit or other thin divider, through which something can be inserted. Slots are sometimes used to receive coins, as in a coin machine, or to hold a paper ticket with barcode for scanning (as on an airliner).

A slot is also a position within a sequence or series, as in “a time slot” for a meeting. The term is also used for a position in a line, as when someone waits in a long line for a ride on the Ferris wheel.

A slot is also a place in a game, where a player places their bet. Slots can vary in complexity from simple mechanical reels to computerized machines with multiple pay lines and symbols. Some slot games even offer bonus features. Many casinos have themes for their slot games, with classic symbols including fruits, bells, and stylized lucky sevens. Some slots are themed after specific movie or television shows, and others have a variety of animal or fantasy themes.
