An Introduction to Well-Being

Health is an emotional state of mind and physical well-being where infirmity and illness are absent. A number of definitions have been use for such purposes since time immemorial. The words “healthy” and “unhealthy” are often used interchangeably with the word “well.” The dictionary definition of the word “health” states that it is to be “not sick but well.” On the other hand, the word “unhealthy” defines a condition where the body is not sound, with full capability for proper growth and development, but the individual’s well being is negatively affected. According to these definitions, the best definition of health is “the state of being capable of following an ordinary lifestyle without the danger of suffering from disease or injury.”

There are several causes behind health issues. One major cause of ill health is bad lifestyle choices. In most cases, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle are the major causes behind many health problems. These lifestyle choices contribute significantly towards the development of chronic diseases like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. These diseases can result in disability, pain, infections, and other health issues.

Mental health is another important concept related to well-being. This aspect focuses on general mental well-being, focusing on how one feels after a positive as well as a negative experience. According to these concepts, the good health is associated with optimistic as well as fearful thoughts. Positive thinking leads to healthy behavior while fearful thought leads to unhealthy behavior. Thus, healthy behavior and healthy thinking can significantly improve one’s physical health as well as their mental health.
