The Definition of Games
The term “game” is defined as any activity in which the player interacts with another person, usually without any real-world consequences. The traditional definition of a game is an interactive activity involving two or more players. The game itself consists of a set of rules, which the players have to obey, and an opponent to compete with. However, the modern definition of a game differs substantially from this traditional one. Some games involve abstract and deconstructed narrative, with no objective or challenge.
Aside from this, games can be divided into two categories. There are social gathering games and computer games. The former are conversational in nature and are often played with friends or family. The latter are often played for an icebreaker. The former are characterized by simple rules and can be quite addictive. The latter, meanwhile, are typically verbal games that kill time. In addition, there are fixed reward games that involve AI and other players, which are a combination of strategy and chance. The latter type of game is often referred to as a win-lose situation.
There are many types of games, but two types stand out. Physical-skill games, for example, are universal and present in every society. Societies that once had them, however, have lost them. In this case, the absence of a game might be due to deculturation, and ethnographers have reported the absence of a game in an incorrect way. Strategic games, on the other hand, tend to be rarer, and are often present only in highly integrated societies. They are particularly common in places where political leaders use symbols and social relations to consolidate power.
