Understanding the Concept of Health
The definition of health is a complex concept. It focuses on a person’s physical, social, and emotional resources and encompasses the entire life cycle. In particular, it refers to the ability of the individual to achieve and maintain homeostasis and recover from adverse events. It also encompasses the ability to cope with stress, acquire new skills, and establish relationships. In addition to the physical aspects of health, it also refers to the mental and emotional well-being of a person.
In the early 20th century, the medical model became a globally recognised concept. The biomedical model emphasized disease-specific characteristics. However, the biopsychosocial model emphasized the interrelatedness of health-related factors and aimed to better understand the social, psychological, and environmental influences that influence a person’s health. This definition includes the physical, social, and psychological aspects of health. As a result, it is important to realize that the concept of health includes more than simply the absence of disease.
The WHO originally defined health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Today, this definition is no longer fit for purpose, and the focus of healthcare should be shifted to the ability to adapt to change, self-manage, and be resilient. In order to achieve optimal health, the concept of health must be clearly defined, and the meaning of the term must be understood. It is also essential to understand the cultural and social factors that influence one’s health.
