Action-Adventures – The Many Different Types
A game is basically a structured type of activity, usually undertaken as a form of fun or amusement, and at times used as an educational instrument. Games are different from work, which tend to be carried out primarily for monetary remuneration, and in comparison to art, which more often is an expression of personal or aesthetic values. A common feature of most games is that they are played between individuals, rather than between groups. This is not because of any intrinsic inferiority of the form; rather it is the influence of human interaction, and the associated complexity of the games, that make them interesting and worthy of study. The great thing about games, whether played individually or with others, is that they tend to make people think.
We can classify games into a number of broad categories, including action, adventure, arcade, card, simulation, sports, puzzle, racing, and strategy games. Each of these categories has its own strengths, as well as weaknesses, but whatever category we look to fit a game into, there will be some common features that all of the different types share. These features and/or concepts are what we will be discussing in the following paragraphs, and the topics will overlap considerably, so it is probably best to start with one genre and then move on to others.
An action-adventure game is one in which the player takes the role of some character in an interactive fiction, often with a number of different roles, like fighting alongside other characters, rescuing the protagonist, exploring the environment, interacting with other individuals, etc. Often, this genre requires very strict narrative control, as all actions and reactions must be linked to the actions and reactions of the protagonist(s). Although the action-adventure game genre generally lends itself to narrative perfection, it also has a number of unique qualities, such as the fact that almost all action-adventures require a high degree of skill to succeed in. This is because the game requires you to think strategically, as well as being highly alert and attentive to your surroundings.
